DECATUR County was created by the act of the legislature of 1873. It is one of the northern tier of counties in the northwestern part of
the State; ten counties lie between it and the Missouri River, two between it and Colorado. Its area is 900 square miles.1
Organized in 1879. County Seat, Oberlin. Named in honor of Commodore Stephen Decatur, a distinguished American naval officer. He fell in a
duel with Commodore Barron, United States Navy, in 1808.
