PAWNEE County was a part of the original hunting grounds of the once powerful tribe of Pawnee
Indians, and after them it was named. There are two counties between it and the Indian Territory;
four between it and Nebraska; five between it and Colorado; nine between it and Missouri.1
Organized in 1872. County seat, Larned. Named for the once powerful tribe of Pawnee Indians,
the area of this county having been included in their original hunting grounds.2
