BIRTH DATA -- RESIDENTS, FORMER RESIDENTS
ALIVE IN 1917
TO RESEARCHERS:
The attached files represent my transcriptions of the civilian draft
registration in 1917-1918 for some of the Kansas counties. I hope you will find these helpful
and of interest. I will not be adding any more transctipions at this time.
WHAT ARE THESE?
During the last two years of World War I,
almost 24 million Americans were required to register for the military draft. I
must emphasize civilian registration because only a small minority of these men
were ever inducted into the military. A higher percentage of this American male
population was reached by draft registration than by the 1920 census. In
addition, the information provided was much more complete and reliable than the
census information because the registrant was the person providing the
information. Because many states did not have birth registration during the
years these men were born, the cards serve the function of substitute birth
records.
WHERE TO LOCATE COPIES:
Microfilm copies of the original cards are maintained by the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter Days Saints (LDS...the Mormons). Go to FAMILY SEARCH
http://www.familysearch.org/
Then enter the name of the state. When the state records appear,
find the category entitled MILITARY RECORDS -- WORLD WAR I.
You can order loaner copies of microfilm at your local
Mormon Family History Center.
Payment for mailing costs is required. Catalog subject heading: UNITED STATES --
MILITARY RECORDS -- WORLD WAR I [although these records are not actually military records].
Original cards are kept at the National Archives branch near Atlanta, Georgia.
Remember over 80% of the registrants never went into the military and
will NOT have military records!
A full explination of the cards can be found at:
