MOUNT WASHINGTON was known as "Hells Kitchen" in the beginning. Later after
the county was formed it was called the Crossroads, because the new road between Louisville
and Bardstown was being formed along with a road from Taylorsville, Spencer County to
Shepherdsville. Louisville to Bardstown was north to south and Taylorsville to
Shepherdsville east to west with the Crossroads being about half way between all of them.
This was about 1820s. Mt. Washington was then name Mt. Vernon, but them name was changed
when a Post Office was filed for because there was all ready a Mt. Vernon post
office.
Mt. Washington was awarded a Post Office in 1828 until present. (40047)
