Dear Mr. Oller:
I received your name from the Civil War Units File and was hoping you might give me some quick advice. After searching the Roster of Confederate Soldiers here in the North Carolina Archives, I found a soldier who appears to be one of my relatives. I am trying to find any service records or other information to verify our relationship. The soldier is William Langdon of the 2nd Mtd. Inf. KY, Co. E. If you have any information or could suggest sources for this information, I would be very grateful. Best wishes, Chip

Saw your names as interested in Kentucky Civil War items. My Union relative in the Civil War was: William Frederick Hoch. rose to Captain in the 4th Regiment Mounted Infantry. I've got quite a bit of information from the "muster in/out" rolls, etc, but would like more detailed information on the battles, movements, dates, etc for:
company A: July 1, 1861 - May 11, 1864
company G: May 11, 1864 - August 7, 1864
company F: August 7, 1864 - August 30, 1865
Those were the dates I believe he was associated with the 4th Infantry. Need to get the pension info some day.... Are there any photo's of the 4th? Any regimental history? He was wounded and was employed in December 1864 at Clay USA General Hospital, Louisville. Just know he was wounded in the "tibia".
I'm still trying to find out where he is buried, but best guess is in Pasedena, California - when he was 99 years old!
Any pointers/info you can provide will be appreciated. If you're interested, I'll send you a copy of my "writeup" on W. F. Hoch for your comments... Thanks in advance! Jim Hoch, 3 South 476 Fourth Street, Warrenville, IL 60555, 630-393-4468

Information I have is that the unit was made up of sympathizers from Western Kentucky, raised by Milford E Callahan. Fought with Forrest almost exclusively, who gave the unit highest praise for "always being in the thick of it". Unit had 3 12# mountain Howitzers and 1 James Rifle bronze 6 pounder. I would like to find the unit record with Forrest Cav and any other information that might be available.
Sincerely, Gary Lord

Thanks for your fast response. My GreatGrandfather's last name was Coke [no kidding], his first name may have been John, Charles or Dallas, I can't remember now. He may have been from Frankfort or near about. I was told there was a picture at Fort Harrodsburg of a reunion of Morgan's Raiders at the turn of the century. Would you know about that? Again thanks for your help, Dallas

DENISE A MERRITT DENISE A MERRITT, May 5, 1997
Greetings!
I have just begun working on an angle I hadn't previously tho't to check. I am trying to determine where in Germany my husband's SMITH ancestors came from. A family sheet done in the 1930's by folks now deceased says that Godfrey SMITH returned with his brothers from the Civil War. What I have so far is this: John (Schmidt) SMITH b. 1804 Prussia d. 1867 Breck.KY, Katharine (wife)
Children: Catharine b. 1826 Germany d. 1900 Wichita KS, married Bartlett NORTON (our line) Godfrey SMITH b. 1829 Prussia, married "Bettie" Sarah Eliz. Milam "Jake" Jacob SMITH b. 1832 d. 1896 Breckinridge Co. KY, don't know if he married Adam SMITH b. 1833 Prussia d. 1891 Breckinridge Co. KY, married Cynthia Jane NORTON It is possible there are other siblings named Margaret who married Bartlett MILAM, Decia SMITH who married Albin Drain, Monroe SMITH,
John SMITH Jr. & Solomon SMITH.
The note on the Family Group Record says "Godfrey SMITH served in the Civil War with brothers; all three returned." It doesn't say which three. I am hoping perhaps one lived long enough to apply for a pension and we could learn something from pension records or some records!!!
I'm writing to you because you had down Civil War Interests in Breckinridge Co. KY. I have no idea if any of the NORTON's served in the War. Bartlett NORTON was b. 1826 so he would have been an age to serve.
Appreciate any information you have handy that you would be willing to share with me. Denise Merritt, Yakima WA

My GGrandfather, Nimrod Smith, fought in the Civil War. He joined the Union Army , September 21, 1861 at Camp Nelson and mustered in as a private at Camp Dick Robinson, KY on October 8, 1861. His unit was Company I, 3rd Kentucky Infantry Volunteers. He was wounded at the battle of Shiloh. While recuperating from his wounds he contacted tuberculosis and was not able to keep up with his unit. He received a medical discharge at Murfreesboro, Tennessee on February 25, 1863 as a corporal. His commanding officer was Captain John Maret. I have a copy of his discharge that contains all of this information. What I would like to know is what other battles he may have fought in. Also would like to make contact with others whose relatives served in the same unit. Oddly, my father joined the army for WWII at Camp Robinson, KY. Could Camp Dick Robinson and Camp Robinson be the same place? If so, how could I get a history of the army base? Nimrod and his wife , Sarah Jane Clark, are buried in Rockcastle County KY.

He also had a brother-in-law Riley F Burton who served with the Halls Gap Battalion. This is all it says on his tombstone. He is buried in Nancy, Ky, in Fairview Cemetary.
