This collection provides maps of the land cessions made by American Indian Nations during the interval between the formal establishment of the United States and 1894.
It consists of all sixty-seven maps from Indian Land Cessions in the United States, compiled by Charles C. Royce and presented as Part 2 of the Eighteenth Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, 1896-97. The Report was printed by the Government Printing Office in 1899.
These maps identify, through assigned Royce Area Numbers, the treaty or the other legislative mechanism that created that cession. You should consult the Royce volume to identify the specific legal instrument and its parameters. The Library of Congress has produced an electronic version of the Royce compilation.
The National Park Service of the United States Department of the Interior has a Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act web site that indexes these cessions and Royce maps by State.
The texts of 366 of the 375 Indian treaties recognized by the Department of State are available at University of Nebraska.
The remaining nine documents are provided by the University of Nebraska – Lincoln.
All maps are public domain material, i.e., they may be copied.
