Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. She was born January 28, 1910, in Obion County, Tennessee, a daughter of the late Henry Linson and Lucy Brinkley Linson. She was a member of Matthews Memorial Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Graves Goad, who she married June 25, 1925. Survivors include a son, Milton Goad of Seattle; four daughters, Vivian Rogers of Pine Bluff, Lucy Reed Nannie of Carlisle, Linda Chappell of England (Lonoke County) and Pam Williamson of Texarkana, Texas; a sister, Lois Smith of Benton; 13 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. ______________________________ JESSE JAMES JR. Jesse "Bud" James Jr., 66, of Pine Bluff, died November 30, 1997, at his home. A native of Bono (Craighead County), he was born September 6, 1931, a son of the late Jesse James Sr. and Lena Young James. He was a heavy equipment operator. Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Nutt James; a son, Mickey James of Pine Bluff; a daughter, Robin James of Pine Bluff; and two sisters, Naomi Handley of Pine Bluff and Icelle Painter of Grady. Graveside services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday in Bayou Meto Cemetery at Reydel with the Rev. Eddie Harrison officiating. Burial will be handled by Hale-South Funeral Home of Pine Bluff. _____________________________ FRANCES WONZO DERMOTT-- Frances Wonzo, 50, of Dermott, died November 16, 1997, at Halley (Chicot County). Born July 9, 1947, at Portland (Ashley County) she was a daughter of the late Frank and Dessie Lewis Wonzo. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church at Dermott. Survivors include two children, Charles Johnson and Frances Wonzo, both of Dermott; a brother, Lem Wonzo of Atlanta; four sisters, Linda Vessley of Little Rock, Jennie B. Jones and Josie Wonzo, both of El Dorado, and Eloise Scott of Bastrop, Louisiana, and one grandchild. A native of Lincoln County, he was born November 12, 1923, a son of the late Garland and Coye Lord Vick. He was a retired builder and a Baptist. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Vick; four sons, Garland Vick and Greg Vick, both of Benton, Mike Vick of Puntagorda, Florida, and Keith Vick of Heber Springs; and nine grandchildren. Graveside services were Sunday at Holly Springs Cemetery near Star City with Randy Magar officiating. Burial was handled by Griffin Services of Star City. ______________________________ LOIS JONES LITTLE ROCK-- Lois Jones, 74, of Warren, died November 30, 1997, at Baptist Medical Center. Born February 1, 1923, in Bradley County, she was a daughter of the late John Thomas Neal and Izety Timley Johnson Neal. She was a retired inspector for the Jack Winter Company. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. She was the widow of Doyle "Jack" Jones. Survivors include a son, Charles Jones of Little Rock; a brother, Johnny Bob Jones of Pine Bluff; three sisters, Clara Calvert of Bastrop, Louisiana, and Christine Boccarossa and Patsy Stewart, both of Pine Bluff; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery at Warren. ________________________________ VESTER SIMS WARREN-- Vester Sims, 86, of Warren, died November 28, 1997, at his home. Born August 11, 1911, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Samuel H. Sims and Josephine Langford Sims. He served in the Army during World War II. He was a retired employee of Potlatch Corporation. He was a member of Mount Elba Missionary Baptist Church near New Edinburg (Cleveland County). Survivors include his wife, Mozelle Childress Sims, who he married on February 12, 1934, at New Edinburg; a son, Phillip Edwin Sims of Copper Hill, Virginia; four brothers, Harold Dean Sims of Kingsland, C. V. Sims of Choudrant, Louisiana, Roland Sims of Newark, Texas, and Arling Sims of Osceola; a sister, Maxine Miller of Kingsland; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Graves Cemetery by Frazer's Funeral Home of Warren. ______________________________ GENEVIE WAYMAN Genevie "Genie" Wayman, 67, of Pine Bluff, died November 29, 1997, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center. Born January 1, 1930, at Pine Bluff, she was a daughter of the late Burley A. and Laura Ragsdale Gray. A lifelong resident of Pine Bluff, she was educated here and graduated from Pine Bluff High School in 1947. She married Allen L. Wayman on March 14, 1948, at Immanuel Baptist Church in Pine Bluff by Rev. Paul Fox. She worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell and AT&T for 35 years, retiring in 1990. She was secretary for the Lee Cemetery Association, was the union representative for Communication Workers of America and a member of the Telephone Pioneers in Pine Bluff. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, serving as director for senior adults. She was chairman of the Senior Spectaculars and a member of the Jefferson Hospital Auxiliary Volunteers. According to her family, she loved music and played in the Strumming Seniors Band as well as the Joyettes Band. She loved to play at nursing homes and entertain others. She loved to collect owl figurines and had over 700. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Leon, Hollis and George Gray. Survivors include her husband, Allen Wayman; a son, Michael A. Wayman of Sachse, Texas; six sisters, Lorella Garner, Lucille Steed, Zelma Marshall, and Laura Nichols, all of Pine Bluff, Frances DeLaVega of Coppel, Texas, and Dorothy Noyes of Lake Village; and two grandchildren. Burial will be in Lee Cemetery. ________________________________ JOSEPH McMAHAN TRENTON-- Joseph Paul McMahan, 65, of Trenton (Phillips County), formerly of Kelso (Desha County), died November 29, 1997, at Trenton. Born October 8, 1932, at Kelso, he was a son of the late Paul McMahan and Luie Mae Smith. He was a farmer and was a Baptist. Survivors include his wife, Faye McMahan; three sons, Dexter McMahan of McGehee, Lew Ray McMahan of Pine Bluff and David McMahan of Arkansas City; three daughters, Becky Stratton of Tillar, Karen Padgett of Watson and Terry Moom of Trenton; two brothers, Larry McMahan of Arkansas City and Mike McMahan of Watson; four sisters, Linda Watson of Arkansas City, Paula Crose of Watson, Vicki Godfrey of Hertford, North Carolina, and Sandy Jones of Little Rock; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Born May 30, 1918, in Bradley County, she was a daughter of the late William Jeremiah Frazer and Mary Elizabeth Johnson Frazer. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. She married Paul P. Lovett on January 28, 1946, and he died January 3, 1982. Survivors include a brother, W. J. Frazer of Grand Prairie, Texas. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Frazer's Funeral Home at Warren. He was born on July 21, 1926, in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi, a son of the late Homer Hartness and Stella Mae Andrews Hartness. He was a member of West End Baptist Church at West Point and was a retired diesel mechanic. He was born on October 4, 1952, at Pine Bluff, a son of Frances Ruth Huett Sanderson of Pine Bluff and the late Harbert Sanderson Sr. He was raised and received his early education at Pine Bluff, graduating from Pine Bluff High School in 1971. He also graduated from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, with a degree in business administration. He served in the Army for 2 1/2 years. He was a carrier for 17 years for the U.S. Postal Service at Little Rock, working at the Pleasant Ridge branch before his death. He was a Baptist. Roe, 74, of Pine Bluff, died December 1, 1997, at Arkansas Convalescent Center. She was born on August 4, 1923, at Yancopin (Desha County), a daughter of the late Walter Edmund and Minnie Pearl Blunt Barton. She was raised at Yancopin and received her early education at Watson and Wilmar. She moved to Pine Bluff when she was a young woman and worked for Arkansas Power and Light Company at Pine Bluff. She was a homemaker and a member of First Christian Church. She was a volunteer for local hospitals and the American Red Cross for several years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Randy M. Roe Jr., who she married on March 27, 1948, at Pine Bluff, and who died on October 27, 1991. Survivors include two sons, Charles M. ÒMartyÓ Roe and Robert E. J.T. and Emmer Kumpe Kelley. He was raised and received his early education at Pine Bluff and was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving as a military police officer. He was a glass glazer for Standard Lumber Company and Pine Bluff Glass, retiring in 1979. He was a member of Whiteville Missionary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by four brothers; and two sisters. James Emory McKissic, 84, of Pine Bluff, who died November 29, 1997, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center, are scheduled for noon Thursday at First Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. D.L. OÕNeal officiating. Burial will be in P.K. Miller Cemetery by Henson Mortuary. He was born on October 18, 1913, at Trenton (Phillips County), a son of the late Peter and Clara Jeter McKissic. He attended Trenton public schools, where he completed the eighth grade. He then moved to Pine Bluff and attended J.C. Corbin High School, Arkansas Agricultural Mechanical and Normal College (now the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff) and Baptist College. He worked for Cotton Belt Railroad and retired from there. He was a moderator of the Regular St. Marion District and was the pastor of several churches, including St. Matthew Baptist Church at Morrilton, St. John Baptist Church at Dardanelle, Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church at Wooster and Mount Calvary Baptist Church at Pine Bluff for 40 years. He participated in district, state and national Baptist congresses and was involved in all the progressive work of the denomination. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosa Daniels McKissic; and six siblings. Survivors include six sons, Bobby Morrow of Milwaukee, James H. Born September 5, 1903, in Yell County, he was a son of the late Cal Cooper and Suszie Ad Dumas where he was a deacon. He was a Sunday school teacher for 20 years and song leader for Bethel Baptist Church. He was a farmer. He was preceded in death by a son, Hobert Cooper, and a daughter, Sue Tew. Survivors include his wife, Clara Cooper; three sons, G.H. He was born on January 18, 1930, at Little Garnett (Lincoln County), a son of the late Charlie Ben Harrison and Ella Mae Chinn Harrison. He was the assistant pastor at United Pentecostal Church at Warren. Born May 28, 1909, at Bluffton (Yell County), she was a daughter of the late Efrum and Charcie May Cox. Reared and educated in Bluffton, she moved to Dumas in 1931. She married Carl Alphin in 1938 at Dumas. He preceded her in death on July 27, 1976. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Louretha Allred. Moving to San Diego in 1942, she was a production worker for Ryan Aeronautical. She retired in 1969 and moved back to Arkansas in 1970. She was a member of the 28th Street Church of Christ and enjoyed yard work. Survivors include a sister, Modean Rabjohn of Dardanelle; a nephew, Billy Herring of Pine Bluff with whom she lived for several years. Burial will be in Bellwood Cemetery. _______________________________ BENNETT CLUBBS CHICKASAW, Alabama-- Bennett Alexander ÒBennieÓ Clubbs Sr., of Chickasaw, Alabama, died December 1, 1997, at his home. Born in Monongahela, Pennsylvania, he was a son of the late Edwin and Mazzie Clubbs. He received his bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Florida. He began a 42-year career with International Paper Company in 1941 at the Panama City Mill. In 1956 he transferred to the IP mill at Bas utilities, maintenance and engineering supervisor at the Pine Bluff mill in 1957. In 1967 he moved to the Springhill mill where he was assistant mill manager. In 1969 he moved back to Pine Bluff as production manager. He was promoted to division maintenance coordinator at the Mobile mill in 1972. He worked at the Georgetown mill from 1981 until he retired in 1984. After retirement on December 31, 1984, he served as an engineering consultant. He also ran Bennett A. Clubbs Inc., a consulting firm, from 1985 to 1990. He was born on November 7, 1919, at Lincoln, Nebraska, a son of the late Willis Nathaniel and Florence Davis Brainard. He was a doctor of veterinary medicine. He attended Lincoln public schools, the University of Nebraska and Nebraska Wesleyan University. He was in the Naval Flight Training Program at Pensacola, Florida and graduated as a naval aviator. He became a 2nd lieutenant in the Marine Corps in 1942. He was a pilot in a dive bomber squadron in the Pacific, sent with the First Marine Aircraft Wing. He was a participant in aerial combat in several campaigns from Guadalcanal and other air bases in the South Pacific. He received his pre-medical training at Colorado A&M after his military service. He received his doctor of veterinary medicine from the University of Missouril, graduating in its first graduating class of veterinary medicine in 1950. Born August 13, 1917, at Braden, Oklahoma, she was a daughter of the late Oscar D. Harris and Sarah Frances Middleton Harris. She was reared in Pine Bluff and attended Pine Bluff High School and Memphis State University. She married Burrell D. Johnston and lived in Memphis 36 years. He died in 1966. While in Memphis, she was office manager for General Motors (GMC Truck Division) for 28 years. She returned to Pine Bluff in 1977 and married C. Willard Haralson in 1982. He died February 11, 1986. She was a charter member of General Motors Girls Club of Memphis and served on the board of directors of Professional Secretaries Association in Memphis. She was named Secretary of the Year in 1963 at Memphis and was a charter member of General Motors Salaried Retirees Club of Memphis. She was a member of Jefferson Regional Medical Center Auxillary (volunteer in the intensive care unit), a volunteer at Trinity Village Medical Center, and member of the Grider Field Alumni Association. She was a member of Watson Chapel Baptist Church. Survivors include two stepsons as, and George Johnston of North Little Rock; a brother, Woody A. She received a masterÕs degree from Columbia University and a doctorate from Columbia. She was a state nutritionist at Arkansas and Missouri. She and her husband lived in Indiana for more than 30 years, where she participated in the Indiana and American dietetic associations. Born November 17, 1936, in Van Buren, she was a daughter of the late Homer Damon and Leona Mae Stanrod Harris. She was reared and received her early education in Van Buren, where she graduated from Van Buren High School in 1954. In 1958, she graduated from Arkansas TeacherÕs College in Conway (now University of Central Arkansas) with a bachelorÕs degree in music. She later returned to UCA and earned her masterÕs degree. An employment counselor, she worked for International Rehabilitation Services for eight years before ill health forced her to retire in 1995. From 1976 to 1985, she was employed by the Dep selor. She also worked as a night receptionist at Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Home. She had been a resident of Pine Bluff since 1970. She resided in Grady before moving to Pine Bluff. She moved to Pine Bluff in 1940 and worked for Ben Pearson Manufacturing for a brief period prior to marriage to Howard Holden on April 4, 1942, at Pine Bluff. She worked as a seamstress for the Cloth Shop and later the MaRu in Jefferson Square Shopping Center, where she retired after 17 years. She had been a member of Carr Memorial United Methodist Church since 1946. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of United TrainmanÕs Union. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Sgt. Edgar Wardlaw and Secerd Wardlaw. Born February 12, 1922, at Clarksville, Tennessee, he was a son of the late James Jefferson Wooten and Alice Anderson Stone Wooten. He was reared and educated at Springfield, Tennessee, where he graduated from Springfield High School. He graduated from Capital City Business College and the Federal Aviation Administration Aeronautical Institute at Oklahoma City. He served in the Army during World War II and was stationed in China, Burma and India. He worked for the Federal Aviation Administration as a traffic controller for several years before retiring in 1984. In 1968, he was appointed to serve on a two-year committee that rewrote the rules and regulations for the F.A.A. at Washington. He worked with Roscoe Bush and Abbott Goodwin to reorganize the American Legion baseball league in Pine Bluff and also served as board president for several years for the local chapter of American Legion Baseball. He enjoyed Òbig bandÓ music and was an avid collector of Glen Miller recordings. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church and American Legion Post 32. He was the owner and editor of several newspapers in his career, including the Prairie Drummer at Colby, Kansas, and the Chicot Spectator at Lake Village. He was the co-owner of James Quick Print at Monticello before he died. He wrote several history books when he lived in Kansas and was known for his weekly newspaper column, ÒAnklinÕ Down FranklinÓ. He wrote, The Battle of Ditch Bayou, Seven Tales From 7 Devils and co-authored Streets of Monticello with Charles Jackson, all in recent years. He was preceded in death by eight brothers and four sisters. She was born on May 21, 1903, at Pine Bluff, a daughter of the late George H. Gammill and Mattie Gammill. She was an expression teacher (dramatics) and attended Wesley Methodist Church at Pine Bluff. Dobson, 71, of Pasco, Washington, died D er at Richland Washington. He was born on December 4, 1926, at CrockettÕs Bluff, Arkansas, a son of Bertha Dobson of Grady, Arkansas, and the late Earl Dobson. He lived at Pasco for 36 years and was the pastor at Riverview Baptist Church at Pasco. He was preceded in death by his brother, Pete Dobson. Burial will be in Riverview Heights Cemetery at Kennewick, Washington by Bruce Lee Memorial Chapel at Pasco. ______________________________ MARY CHERRY LITTLE ROCK-- Mary Elizabeth Bohnert Cherry, 87, of Little Rock, formerly of Pine Bluff, died December 29, 1997, at Baptist Medical Center. She was born on January 31, 1910, at Longville, Louisiana, a daughter of the late Willam Asa Bohnert and Versa Niven Bohnert. She was a 1928 Pine Bluff High School graduate. After graduating, she attended Kidd-Key College and Conservatory, where as a pianist she gained favorable comment from music critics in Arkansas and Texas. After graduating from college in 1930, she returned to Pine Bluff and taught school for many years. She was noted for her work in the Presbyterian church at Pine Bluff then at Magnolia. She joined First Presbyterian Church at Blytheville in 1954, where she served as deacon, elder and two terms as president of the Women of the Church. She was District IV chairman of East Arkansas Presbytery in 1966 and 1967. In 1969, she was the vice president of the Synod and was honored with a life membership in the Women of the Church. The Daughters of the American Revolution honored her for her years of service in its membership. She played bridge and gardened. Cherry, her high school sweetheart whom she married in 1937; a brother, John Asa Bohnert; and a sister, Jo Ann Bohnert McNulty. Survivors include a son, John S. Cherry Jr. of Little Rock; and a grandchild. A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church at Little Rock with the Rev. Howard Gordon officiating.
