Walter Evans April 16,1914 Benton Courier

   Walter Evans, a deaf mute aged over twenty-one years, was killed on 
the Rock Island Wednesday morning by being hit by an engine while he 
was walking on the track toward Bauxite. The accident happened about 
two miles east of Benton. The ashby Undertaking co. was notified and 
the body brought to Benton and embalmed. It was reported that he was 
from England, but inquiry there brought out the fact that the young 
man's relatives lived in Oklahoma. They have made no order in regards 
to claiming the body. It will be held until Saturday, and if they do 
not call for it, burial will be ordered by the county.  
   The body was not mangled, only the left arm and shoulder being crushed. 
An inquest was held Thursday afternoon, the jury returning a verdict that 
Evans came to his death by beening struck by engine of train no. 631 on 
the Rock Islnd, one mile northeast of Lena Lumber Co. mill. Members of 
the train crew testified that they never knew of the accident until 
notified Thursday morning to appear before the coroner. This accident 
happened at a curve on the fireman's side and it is possible that the 
engineer did not see the young man.  
   Two boys who were looking out the window at the time the accident
happened reported it to the conducter when the train reached Benton, 
that they saw the man knocked from the track and the conducter asked 
the engineer he said he knew nothing of the matter and it was dropped.
